Well Told exists to keep a family's memories. That only works if you trust us with them, so here is how we treat what you give us — in plain words.
Interview recordings, uploaded tapes and video, transcripts, photos, and the book itself live in private, encrypted storage that is never public. They are used for one purpose: making your family's book. We never sell them, and we never use them to train anything.
Two companies help the calls happen, and it would be wrong to say nobody else touches them: Twilio carries the phone call, and Google's AI service listens and turns speech into words, on our own private account. They work only on our instructions, they may not use your family's material for anything of their own, and they may not train on it. Nobody else sees it. When you pay, your card details go straight to Stripe — we never see them and never store them.
We never clone, imitate, or synthesize a real person's voice — even if you ask. When you hear your storyteller, it is always the original recording.
Every file you upload is checked for malware before it is stored anywhere we keep it.
When you add a photo, we look for where the faces are, so the page can show you each one and ask who it is. That is the whole of it — it finds rectangles. We never build a faceprint, never compare one face against another, and never try to work out who someone is from their picture. You tell us who is in a photo; the software only saves you having to describe where they are standing.
Every call begins with who is calling, the fact that it's an AI assistant, that the call is recorded, and a spoken yes from every person on the line — every call, not just the first. Those consent records are kept so you never have to take our word for it.
We keep your recordings safe for ten years from delivery so your download link keeps working. Ask us to delete your family's material and we will, promptly and completely — except the consent records the law expects us to retain.
